As we reflect on the first quarter of 2024, we’re excited to share some updates, learnings, and achievements over the past three months.

1. User Engagement - Fostering Vibrant Communities

At StockRepublic, we take pride in fostering engaging online investing communities, and the first quarter of 2024 was no exception. In January, we witnessed the extraordinary dedication of our hi!stocks users, who organized a meetup 

 of the app, showcasing the real-world impact of our platform in bringing investors together.

Moreover, we achieved record-breaking levels of engagement across multiple investor communities. In January, comdirect's hi!stocks achieved an all-time high monthly social score with a 15% year-over-year growth. (Social score is a weighted score aggregating posts, replies, reactions, and follows across all the app users.) Then in February, there was a surge in activity on Avanza Placera's forum, with over 3,000 posts recorded in a single day, marking a 16% growth from the previous daily record. These milestones underscore the active participation of retail investors, a positive signal for the year ahead.

2. User Returns - Empowering Financial Growth

Our commitment to democratizing investing and delivering tangible benefits to our users has yielded promising results. An analysis of our hi!stocks user base revealed a notable increase in financial returns following their engagement with our platform. 62.8% of users experienced higher returns after joining hi!stocks, with an average increase of 3.55 percentage points.

At StockRepublic, our mission is to make investing more accessible and transparent for everyone, ultimately providing higher returns. These results show we're on the right track!

3. Product - Making Investing More Inclusive

On the Product front, we’ve released a few exciting improvements in Q1. Most notably, now users can generate polls and share their weekly report directly in the feed to get direct feedback from the community.


With the new poll function, users can write any question they desire and add up to six response options. Once posted, other users can easily vote on their favorite option with a simple click of a button. Additionally, the ability to share one’s weekly report (a roundup of winners & losers and benchmark against the index) allows more transparency into how others are performing on a weekly basis. We’re excited to see how our end-users continue to engage on our apps with these new features!

4. Customers - Captivated by Gen Z's Potential

More and more, we’ve noticed our bank and broker clients have been keenly attuned to the evolving landscape shaped by Generation Z. With their innate affinity for technology, social consciousness, and financial drive, Gen Z represents a demographic that demands attention.

Gen Z's inclination towards social trading is already apparent, as illustrated by a breakdown in one of our client’s user base. One of our clients witnessed a remarkable +235% increase in Gen Z users when comparing their core user base to the user base of their social trading app that was developed by StockRepublic.

As we continue our journey into the second quarter of 2024, we remain steadfast in our commitment to helping our clients activate their users to ultimately drive more financial education, empowerment, and wealth.

Q1 2024 Recap: Record Engagement, Greater Returns & More

The retail investing market has evolved and shifted away from traditional face-to-face financial advice. More and more investors are now embracing online trading platforms like Robinhood, eToro, and TradeRepublic, marking a transition to a faster and more digital world. Everyday investors are turning to social platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok for peer-to-peer investment advice. And that’s not to mention the very active communities on platforms like Reddit and Discord, where investors share detailed insights about their market predictions and activities.

The rise of more diversified financial knowledge, however, is not without its faults. Meme stocks (those that gain popularity among retail investors through social media) are unpredictable and volatile. Experiences of jumping on bandwagons and losing money quickly are all too familiar to some.

Despite the plethora of information, finding a trustworthy source remains challenging. The era of promising overnight wealth with vague stock recommendations is losing credibility. There needs to be legitimacy in the space. This can take form in social trading products (like the ones we at StockRepublic build!). Social trading apps are a legitimate form of sharing financial knowledge and shouldn’t get a bad reputation.

Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) knows this. They are technology obsessed, digitally native, socially conscious, independent, and financially motivated. They take their finances seriously and a majority of them rely on multiple sources, including social platforms, to make investment decisions.

Social trading apps allow customers to get the best possible real-time benchmark, guidance, and inspiration for investing. Investors can compare their returns to those of their peers, learn from top investor strategies, and share their own gains (or losses). These factors instill confidence and empower investors to make informed financial choices.

Fintech company StockRepublic, a world leader in apps and services for social trading, raises SEK 30 million in a new financing round. The capital round is led by Avanza's subsidiary Placera Media and allows the company to hire more employees, develop its service offering and continue to expand. Outside Sweden, StockRepublic has already established itself in the two largest fintech markets of Germany and the UK.

Placera Media is contributing SEK 15 million after a successful collaboration in which

 since the beginning of the year with good results. The remaining SEK 15 million comes from existing investors and business angels.

StockRepublic has gained a firm foothold in Germany, the second largest fintech market in Europe, where it has set up a German company, received funding from the city of Hamburg, and won the award for 

the best financial product of the year for 2023

 with the hi!stocks app, which is developed and operated together with comdirect, part of Commerzbank. In the UK, StockRepublic has signed a customer agreement with the country's second-largest investment platform for private investors, interactive investor, and will establish itself there in earnest over the next six months.

, one of Sweden's largest financial sites and a wholly owned subsidiary of Avanza, with approximately 1,000,000 visitors per week, has partnered with us at StockRepublic to upgrade their popular investment forum with new-generation social trading tooling.

The Placera forum has served a key function for the company for many years but was quietly deactivated at the end of 2021 because the technology powering it had slowly become outdated. However, the forum has always been very popular, generating substantial traffic and attracting important visitors. Therefore, it was ideally not something that they wanted to be without.

Placera reached out to us on StockRepublic, wanting to rebuild their forum from scratch using modern technology that supports identified users and moderation to prevent illicit activities. The new solution also needed to fit seamlessly into the Placera and Avanza platforms as a whole.

Using our Social Trading API, we created a scalable and customized solution based on their needs. 

 is integrated with BankID as an extra identification layer, has state-of-the-art moderation tooling, and dually integrates with the Avanza trading platform.

The end-users can now tag, talk about, and follow all of the financial instruments available on the Avanza trading platform. The latest discussion on the Placera forum then effortlessly flows back into the Avanza trading platform, next to the bespoken financial instrument.

The new Placera Forum and the Avanza trading platform can independently exist while remaining connected and offering strong security layers. With this independence, Avanza can utilize the Placera Forum to create content, gain users, regardless of where those people have their bank account, and build relationships with potential new customers. This intersection of the Placera Forum and Avanza creates a customer acquisition channel for the company driven by user-generated content from real investors.

In an important effort to build a closer relationship with our German customers and continue to conquer the second-biggest FinTech market in Europe, we are now setting up a legal entity in Germany.

This has been a long time coming, as StockRepublic has taken many steps to strengthen its foothold in the country.

The process has included adding a Country Manager position, participating in the 

, and establishing a thriving partnership with Commerzbank’s Comdirect, resulting in the investment community; 

But why Germany? Our Country Manager, Max, breaks down the details.

– First off, there are great talents, a combination of highly educated individuals, and a driven workforce. Second, the Neobanking segment, one of our main target groups, is poised to show a revenue growth of close to 53% in 2023. Third, the FinTech market is expected to continue to grow in the country, and with the improved digital infrastructure, we believe that the best is yet to come for the region as a whole. That certainly includes Hamburg, where we’ll have our base.

The legal entity is the next natural building block for StockRepublic and something that is being added to an already strong foundation. With this move, we can attract and hire top German talent, improve our expertise in certain areas, and streamline our operations.

We are now more ready than ever to provide excellent social trading products for the people of Germany.

Growth in Germany Leads to New Legal Entity

StockRepublic is strengthening their foothold in Germany

Here at StockRepublic, we have some unique insights from 

; the social network made explicitly for comdirect and their customers. Last week we pulled some data to showcase the correlation between DAX movements and engagement rates for social trading.

The data is pulled from trading days with a downward DAX movement of at least 2% since the hi!stocks app went live (May 11) until Nov 2. Therefore, the total sample size includes a total of eight different trading days during this period.

On July 5, for example, the DAX index dropped by -2.91% and was, from that perspective, one of the worst trading days for the hi!stocks community. On the back of that, we could see the following increases in engagement (vs. average) as a result:

Compared to average numbers, and therefore, July 5 actually proved to be one of the best 

 trading days for hi!stocks. Furthermore, the average social engagement of the eight trading days from the sample still paints a clear picture of the correlation between DAX index performance and social engagement:

Another fun fact – when we see a DAX movement of -2% or more, the hi!stocks app attracts 10% more visitors than on average.

 People turn to their community in times of uncertainty, and we are happy to provide one.

The concept aims to celebrate an elite group of community members with 5-star rankings and high engagement rates within the platform. Whether they send many messages, leave quality comments, or provide insights and information that other users find helpful, what rings true for all of them is that they make the platform and the experience better for others. As such, we now recognize them as hi!stocks heroes.

Our newfound heroes got their "hi!socks" at the end of October and were given a blue tick next to their username (similar to the verified badge you have seen elsewhere). However, that was just a first step – there are grander plans for the hi!stocks heroes' idea. Next, we want to improve the loyalty program and gamify the overall experience and future rewards. This will likely include the introduction of profile badges, whether for your first trade or most popular contribution, to grow the community of active hi!stocks heroes.

We always have social traders in mind when we look to improve the user experience and increase meaningful engagement in our customers' apps. That is why we recently decided to alter the feed experience to maximize community involvement around trades.

Before, when you made a trade, it became a post in the feed of other social traders.

Now, you will see a similar post but in a slicker design with an actionable link allowing you to access real-time price and trade details. We have made this update to encourage more people to understand the context of why a trade was made and to give them a shortcut to taking action.

The recent design update pinpoints the fact that our white-label apps are always in tune with the latest data insights, market needs, and industry trends. We have updated the feed to maximize community engagement around trades. Now, users see posts with an actionable link to real-time price and trade details. It simplifies the path from inspiration to action, aligning with the latest data insights and market trends.

To make the app more dynamic, we have improved the post-login landing page with an emphasis on social connectivity and improved engagement. Gone are the days of strictly seeing a portfolio overview. With this update, the end-users can access insights, the community, and their portfolio right from the get-go.

The "Portfolio Overview" is now called "My Investments." In this view, we have curated the end users' favorite interaction points in three key tabs, Overview, Holdings, and Transactions, to give quick access and a better overview of everything around their investments.

As a result, 30 days past the change in the 

, we could see the 1st-week retention increase by 15% and the users with connected bank accounts growing by 17%.
